Foundation scent detection training is the first step in developing reliable detection dogs. At the Latimer School of Operational K9s, our Alabama-based program teaches dogs to recognize target odors, build strong search behavior, and prepare for operational scent detection in real-world environments.
Foundation scent detection training introduces dogs to a specific target odor and teaches them to associate that odor with a reward. This process, often called odor imprinting, builds the motivation and focus required for detection work.
At the Latimer School, training begins with controlled exercises that help dogs recognize scent while developing confidence and drive. These foundational skills are essential for success in advanced detection dog training programs.
By establishing strong odor recognition early, dogs are better prepared to perform consistently as they progress into more complex training environments.

Detection dogs learn through repetition, reward, and structured training progression. During early stages, dogs are exposed to target odors in simple environments and rewarded for showing interest in the scent.
As training progresses, dogs learn to:
• actively search for odor
• ignore distractions
• persist until the scent is located
• communicate detection through a clear alert
These behaviors are reinforced through progressive exercises that build reliability over time. Dogs that successfully develop these skills often continue into Field Deployment Training and In-Field Team Training to prepare for real-world search conditions.

Foundation training is not just about teaching a dog to find odor—it is about building a reliable working partner. This stage also introduces handlers to the basics of detection work, including reading behavior and guiding searches.
Dogs are evaluated throughout the process to determine their suitability for advanced training through K9 Selection & Testing.
Teams that demonstrate strong performance may continue into advanced programs and pursue Detection Dog Certification to validate their operational readiness.
This structured progression ensures detection teams are prepared for the demands of real-world deployment.

If you are beginning the process of training a detection dog or developing a working K9 team, foundation scent detection training provides the essential first step.
